Your Green Resource :: Week 70

(FYI: The winners of the giveaways from last weekend will be posted on my facebook page soon, which you can “like” here if you haven’t already!)

Happy Thursday, people! It’s a good day to be alive. I’m about to watch an episode of Glee with the hubs, and I’m drinking a whole pot of winter palace marzipan rooibos tea to myself. Ohmygosh, I’m in love with this tea. A little almond milk and coconut sugar in it, and it tastes like dessert. What’s your favourite hot drink of choice? Other than the caffeinated  morning drink of the gods? (coffee, duh.)

OK, enough foodie talk, and on to business…

The post I chose to pin from last week is Money-Tight Montessori: Sensorial Supplies from Molly Makes Do. I don’t know why, but I’ve been feeling a slight sense of urgency in figuring out this whole homeschooling philosophy thing. Isaac is going to be 5 in September, and I just want to have a plan. I am inspired by unschooling a bit, but also Waldorf, Charlotte Mason, Montessori… and beyond. I appreciate the simple and frugal ideas in this post!

So, now it’s your turn:

Just a few things to remember as you share your green living links – OLD OR NEW – with us each week:

* Make sure to link to the post with your green/natural/frugal living idea – not your homepage.

* We would love it if you could spread the word about Your Green Resource to YOUR readers by linking back to one of the six hostesses. Posts with a link back to Your Green Resource are the posts eligible to be pinned to our Your Green Resource pinboard each week.

* Your Green Resource is a GREAT way to connect with other like-minded bloggers. Check out the other links shared this week – it’s a great way to grow your own blogging community!

Happy Thursday!

Homemade French Fries (Better than Fast-Food!)

These fries are incredibly simple, and they taste better than restaurant fries. Name your favourite fast-food french fry. These are better. I know, lofty goal for those of us who have secret loves for fast food fries. I mean, um, did I just say that out loud??

These fries have only 2 ingredients. Well three if you count the salt, which technically is optional, but unsalted fries are totally lame-o. So use the salt, and for pete’s sake use REAL sea salt. I like Redmond’s Salt (they don’t pay me to say that, but if they did I wouldn’t be opposed… I love their stuff!).

These are actually healthy fries, because they are slathered in coconut oil, which is this awesome super-health food that people are raving about. Some people even take it as a health supplement, so these fries definitely have earned the title “good for ya”.

OK, less chatter, more fry-making. Onward and upward.

First, a disclosure: I am the blogger of the family, and generally I’m the cook too. But not in this case. These are all Chris. I got him a french-fry cutter for Christmas, and he is all “let’s make fries!” at random times, and I’m just an innocent bystander. And fry-eater.

Ingredients

Potatoes, peeled and chopped (we use a fry cutter thingie but you could just cut them)
Organic unrefined coconut oil
Real sea salt (optional, but if you don’t add the salt then we can’t be friends)

Directions

1) Heat cast-iron frying pan with a good amount of coconut oil to medium-high (depending on stove). About a quarter-inch coating the bottom of the pan. (We use two pans at once for more fries).
2) Once it’s hot, add fries evenly in one layer in the pan.  There should be enough oil to cover the entire bottom of the pan and cook all of the fries at the same time.  If there isn’t enough oil add some more, but not enough to cover the fries – we aren’t deep frying them.
3) Let them cook for a while, and then flip the fries over – the goal is to have let the fries cook enough to have browned them on one side.
4) let the fries cook again on the other side for a while, and then continue to flip them every 30 seconds or so as they cook.  They should be a golden brown when there done. This process should take around 15-20 minutes or so.
5) Take the fries out and filter through a metal strainer to let all of the excess oil drip off. Save the oil in a mason jar in the fridge to reuse next time.
6) Sprinkle with real sea salt and enjoy!

There are lots of seasoning options for homemade fries out there on the web, but we haven’t tried any because we’re too busy scarfing these down as soon as they’re cool enough to eat. They. Are. Amazing.

Go forth and make them, and let thine tastebuds rejoice. Amen.

The post I chose to pin from last week is How to Take Care of Compost Worms from Your Gardening Friend. This is a new (to me) blog, and I am thrilled to have found it, as I am heavy into the gardening-learning right now. I am going to attempt a garden this year for the first time, and I am super nervous and excited! Compost is one of those things that (oddly?) totally intrigues me!

3 Days of Giveaways! (Day Three: Fit2B Studios, and the one where I post a photo of my postpartum belly on the internet)

It’s been over five years since I got pregnant with my first. I’ve birthed three babies now and I have the mom-bod to prove it, and that, my friends, is precisely where this post comes in…

I have spent many a rushed ten minutes before leaving the house, frantically trying on eight different outfits before finding one that actually fits and doesn’t make me look 6 months pregnant. I do, you know. Look six months pregnant, that is. Oh yes, I do. You don’t believe me, do you? That’s because I am the suck-it-in expert. It’s true, and it’s exhausting. Allow me to (gulp) prove it to you. Introducing my 7-months-postpartum-for-the-third-time body:

That is my belly at exactly 7 months postpartum after my third child. Standing straight with muscles relaxed, not sucking it in at all. 38 squishy inches around my navel.

Until a few months ago, I believed that this was a relatively normal thing. The postpartum poochy belly that you’ve gotta tuck into your pants. The belly that still looks pregnant. Ugh. It’s embarrassing and shameful, and I am tired of the struggle to love myself and feel sexy and beautiful while also waiting for someone to mistakenly congratulate me on being preggers again.

Don’t get me wrong, I am profoundly grateful to my body. This body has brought forth three brand new sparkling humans with all of the grit and glorious transcendence of birthing and groaning. A body that bears witness to the spiritual event of creation and has been sagged and stretched and marked with silver lines. That is no small thing you know.

All three of them grew in my belly. No wonder it’s a bit worn out.

At the same time I know that I need to be fair to this body of mine. I want to be proud of my marks and lines that give whisper to my role in the co-creation of life, but I also want a flatter tummy and a little less jiggle in my behind. Are you pickin’ up what I’m layin’ down, my friends? I want both, and for the first time ever, I think I can actually have it.

A few months ago I learned about something called diastasis recti: an abdominal injury that causes several symptoms including a poochy belly that won’t go away, lower back pain, and slight urinary incontinence (we all know the pee-a-little-when-you-laugh-or-sneeze jokes among women who have given birth!). This is an actual injury where your abdominal muscles are separated and do not come back together on their own, and it can lead to much more serious health complications including bowel displacement, herniation, and prolapse. Bethany at Fit2B Studio has a video to show you how to check your belly for a diastasis. I checked mine a couple of months ago and found a separation of 3 finger-widths!

photo source

My first two births were attended by doctors, and my third was by a midwife. My doctors didn’t mention a single thing about this issue, my midwife at least checked my abs at my 6-week-postpartum appointment, but it wasn’t until a friend happened to mention diastastis that I googled it and gulped down the information like a thirsty person in the desert. My still-pregnant-looking belly is a medical condition? One that’s not my fault? One that can be healed?! My jaw hung open as I drank in the information I read at Fit2B.

What a lot of people don’t understand about this injury is that the traditional advice to do crunches actually makes things worse! Bethany explains it all on her site. Thankfully there is a way to heal from this injury. There are specific, gentle exercises that you can do to heal a diastastis recti, and I am embarking on a healing journey for myself, beginning today.

I am going to be blogging about my journey over the next few months as I do the exercises and try to heal and flatten my tummy. We’ll find out together if it really is possible!

I’m calling it The Postpartum Body Project, and this is Week One.

(Also, Bethany doesn’t list “de-jigglify your bum” on her list of benefits of using her exercises, but I’m definitely hoping it’ll be a bonus byproduct…)

This is my mission. To love myself, first, no holds barred, no jiggle left behind. Then, to do all that I can to heal my diastasis recti and get in shape (a shape other than round).

I’m going to love myself either way, that’s the non-negotiable here.

I’m inviting you along for the ride, as I blog my way through it. I have no idea what will happen. Maybe my belly will stay just as pregnant-looking as it does now. Maybe I’ll never shed my mom-butt. Maybe I’ll get a hot bod back just in time for beach weather. Maybe.

Either way it’ll be quite the adventure.

Do you think you may have a diastasis? Or are you just interested in gentle exercise that gets you in shape while also being kind to your body? Fit2B offers monthly memberships. It’s completely online so it’s accessible to anyone, anywhere with an internet connection! It’s just $9.99/month or $99/annually but for today’s giveaway you can win a 3-month membership FREE.

Your Green Resource :: Week 68

Your Green Resource time again! And, a little life update from here in Ricci-ville.

I feel only slightly guilty that I haven’t had any time at all this past week to get a new post up. So many ideas, so little time! I’m a mother first, and a blogger second, so sometimes this blog gets a little lonely. That’s ok. Better it than them. We’ve been doing lots of giggling lately, which has been good for the soul. I promise you no certain number of pinnable posts and shareworthy tutorials, but I do promise honesty and genuine striving to valiant homemaking. I will share my journey with you, and I invite you along for the ride.

We have been running around town this past week checking out rental properties in the search for our own place as of April 1. If you’re new around here, here’s the quick and dirty version: we moved back to our hometown area (the Toronto area) in September 2012 after 2.5 years of living out West in Alberta. We have been staying in my sister’s townhouse while she was away, and as of April 1 we are going to be living in our own space again (Seriously looking forward to that. Also looking forward to unpacking the boxes we packed last July so that we can remember what all we own!). The search took a depressing turn today when our dream place slipped through our fingers. Booooo.  I’m still so bummed out about it, but keeping up hope that we’ll find an even more incredible place to call home for the next few years. One day we might just save up a down payment and buy a house of our own! A girl can dream.

So, on to business here…

The post I chose to pin from last week is the Almond Bliss Smoothie recipe from Good Girl Gone Green. I’ve been on the lookout for new smoothie recipes lately – I always make the exact same recipe, and I need to shake things up a little! This one looks different and amazingly tasty. I love maple syrup!

 So, now it’s your turn:

Your Green Resource :: Week 67

So, it’s January 9th? How are those New Year’s Resolutions going? For me, resolutions are quite forgiving. I tend to “resolve” things that I can achieve gradually over the year, rather than things that I have to do perfectly every day. Learning more about healthy living is at the top of my list, and I look forward to a fabulous and adventurous year of blogging about it all!

What is “Your Green Resource”? It’s your chance to share all your green ideas, resources and solutions with ALL of our readers! That’s right, when you link up on any of our blogs, your idea will get shared with all of the readers here and at:

The post I chose to pin from last week is Lettuce Wraps from Frugal Local Kitchen. I recently went out for dinner at a Mexican restaurant (my favourite, tied with sushi) to celebrate my mother-in-law’s birthday, and I shared an order of fajitas. The restaurant offered lettuce wraps on their menu in addition to their regular flour and corn tortillas, and I ended up eating just the lettuce wraps. They were fantastic. I must have eaten nearly a dozen (they were small leaves), but I didn’t feel that typical bloating and uncomfortable feeling I usually get after eating a starchy/wheat-filled meal. Even the hubs liked them.

So, now it’s your turn:

Homemade Lavender Monster-Away Spray (How to Talk to a Young Child About Bedtime Fears)

The day is drawing to a close. Dinnertime is finished, cute little tooshes have been scrubbed clean in the bath, story-time is over, and even One-More-Story-Pleeeease-time is done. Time to snuggle and get into cozy beds when all of a sudden you hear it: a low growl, or heavy breathing. Those darn monsters in the closet again!

For my four-year-old, it’s either monsters, lions, or giants. They come every night, and they’re usually hiding out in the dresser drawers. We dutifully shoe them away every time, but the pesky things just keep coming back.

It can be so difficult to know the best way to deal with these sorts of things as a parent. Do we play in to the imaginative aspect? Do we flat-out deny the possibility? Do we try to just brush it off as being ridiculous?

My husband and I have a range of inner reactions when dealing with these bedtime fears in our preschooler (and now the toddler, who is learning from her older brother!). It can be frustrating when he just won’t listen to “reason”, and it is heart-wrenching to know that your child is experiencing scary feelings that you cannot take away as easily as you used to. In these times, empathy and understanding are your best and most important tools.

It is so much easier to be compassionate when we have a clear understanding of the issue. While there are a few things that can exacerbate the problem (life events and transitions, scary images in his media intake), it is important to remember that nighttime fears are a perfectly normal part of a child’s development. In fact, they are indicative of a healthy cognitive understanding of the world.

Yes, it’s true that there are scary things in the world. It’s also true that mommy and daddy aren’t the all-powerful beings that he believed them to be in his toddlerhood. This is a normal part of growing in understanding as he gets older, but it can be unsettling for him. He is in previously uncharted territory, and is understandably nervous. He is also just learning to separate the real world from his imagination, which is why simply telling him that monsters do not exist is not an effective strategy.

Your job in all of this is to help him to feel safe and secure while also acknowledging and validating his emotional needs. Simple enough, right? Not always! Here are a few ideas of how to accomplish this.

image source

1) Monster-Away Spray

Fill a spray bottle with water and add a few drops of lavender* essential oil (enough to make it smell mildly of lavender – around 5-10 drops). Use permanent marker to make a “label” (or design one on the computer, print it out, and tape it on if you’re the crafty type). Mine says “also repels lions and giants” at the bottom because those are my four-year-old’s current nighttime fears. Each night at bedtime when he says he’s scared use the spray. You can use it preventatively (“this spray will make the monsters scared to come around!”) or reactively (“this spray makes the monsters run away because they’re afraid of getting wet!”), depending on your child’s needs.

* Lavender essential oil has a natural soothing and calming effect.

2) Offer a Protector Role

Parents often try to use stuffed animals or dolls as comfort for their scared child, but sometimes it’s just not enough. A researcher at a Tel Aviv university who conducted a study on childhood fears recommends using what he calls a “Huggy Puppy”.

“…children are presented with a stuffed dog and told that the once happy puppy is now sad. They are given the responsibility of being the puppy’s friend, caring for him, and ensuring that he is not afraid at night. Because this intervention depends on the child’s willingness to believe the puppy’s story and embrace their new compassionate role, it works best for children with stronger imaginations…” (source)

 3) Enter the Narrative

Don’t say “Oh my goodness, you’re right, these monsters are terrifying!” Instead, join the narrative in order to steer it in a different direction. “How about Daddy gathers up all of the monsters and throws them in the trash for the trash collector to take away? They’ll try and escape, but they can’t, because they’re all stuck together and dizzy from rolling around in the trash can, so they just look silly!” A little bit of silliness is helpful – the laughter will help release some of those tensions, and your child will feel empowered knowing that you understand “the situation” and have it under control.

4) Role-Playing

In Playful Parenting, Dr. Lawrence J. Cohen talks about play as one of the most basic and effective tools for great parenting. I am reading this book right now and absolutely love it. In one part, he says this when talking about play fighting:

“I like to play bad guys or monsters who are just a little bit scary, but also kind of funny, bumbling, and incompetent, so children can use play to overcome their fears. If the bad guys or monsters are too scary, the play just increases children’s fear.”

Find that fine balance between acknowledging the fear and allowing your child’s imagination to work out a solution (ie. they aren’t really that scary after all because they’re so funny, etc), and you’re well on your way.

5) Things to Avoid

Things that may make the problem worse include forcing a child to stay alone in his room alone when scared, punishing or bribing, or forcing your child to “face his fears” in a way that makes him uncomfortable. These things will likely just harm your connection to your child, and make him feel even more fearful because he now has to deal with the fear on his own. Things to avoid saying:

  • You’re a big kid/don’t be a baby.
  • There’s no need to be scared.
  • There’s no such thing as monsters, don’t be ridiculous.
Obviously children’s imaginations are powerful and complex things. They can bring both delight and fear, and I really think the key is to use the imagination as a tool to overcome these common childhood issues.

Other ideas might be to write the monsters a letter to invite friendship, watch movies and read stories that address these issues (I have been debating watching Monsters, Inc. with my son, but I think I’ll wait another year or two still. Perhaps it would be perfect for your child?).

Remember that your goal is to stay connected with your child, provide empathy and support, and be a safe place for him to fall back on as he does the hard work of growing up and conquering fears. Within those parameters, be free to explore all kinds of solutions. You know your child best, so get creative and figure out what works for you.

Your Green Resource :: Week 66

It’s the first YGR of 2013! So exciting! I can’t wait to see what awesome links you have to share this week. Personally, I’m hoping for some gardening wisdom over the next few months as I anticipate planting my very first real garden (as one possessing The Black Thumb of Death). Anyone wanna help a gardener-novice out?

What is “Your Green Resource”? It’s your chance to share all your green ideas, resources and solutions with ALL of our readers! That’s right, when you link up on any of our blogs, your idea will get shared with all of the readers here and at:

Emily at Live Renewed, Megan at Sorta Crunchy, Stacy at A Delightful Home, Rebekah at Simply Rebekah, and Mindy of Creating Naturally

We know that many of you have posts of your own about your green journey that our readers will love. Some examples of Green Resources you can link up:

* Real Food Recipes
* Repurposed Projects
* Upcycled Projects
* Organic Gardening Tips
* DIY Natural or Green
* Thrifty Solutions

In addition to making this a weekly place where you can both share and learn new green ideas, each week we’ll be Pinning our favorite post to the Your Green Resource board! We want your green ideas to go viral – so we’ll pin the post for you!

The post I chose to pin from last week is Good Girl Gone Green’s Coconut Magic Bars. I had my first experience baking with dates as a sweetener in the Christmas season, and it was delicious. These bars looks amazing, and I am seriously going to be trying them ASAP.
