Weekend Link Love
Greetings and salutations! Happy weekend! Here in Ontario, Canada it is a holiday weekend. Monday is Family Day, which is quite literally what it sounds like: a day mandated by our government that is to be set aside to spend with family. One of the smarter moves from our government in recent times.
On Monday we are going with friends to a maple syrup festival (how very Canadian of us, eh?). It should be fun!
I have fond memories in my childhood of heading up to the maple sugar bush that my grandparents used to run each spring as a hobby. We would go trudging out in the snowy forest, checking the cans to see if the sap had been running enough to collect. Then with rosy cheeks and wet mittens we’d cozy up in the cabin, warmed by a wood stove. We’d eat some sort of delectable packed lunch, or perhaps supper warmed on the fire. Something gourmet, of course, like pork and beans or sandwiches or stew. Everything tastes better in the woods, you know. Meanwhile in the boiler shack, forty gallons of sap would be boiling down to a single gallon of precious liquid gold, commonly known as pure and perfect maple syrup. Midway through the boiling process Grandpa would scoop of bit of that bubbling gold out, drizzle it on the snow, and with our eyes big as saucers we’d break off pieces of that golden candy and pop it in our watering mouths and savour it slowly.
Lately I’ve just been enjoying blogging so much. Despite the tension of having more ideas than time to write them, I am loving the little community that has been forming here. Y’all bless me by reading and coming around again. Each time someone tells me they enjoy my blog and my writing, I am complimented to the very depths of my being, to the point of being feeling a little silly and embarrassed. So if you tell me you like my writing and I awkwardly giggle like a little kid, well, it’s just because it means so much to me and I’m not very good at receiving compliments. But… thank-you. Ahem, and that is all.
So, I wanted to just share some links for your weekend reading. I’ve got umpteen million tabs open on my browser again (as per usual) so I’m gonna offload a few onto you. You don’t mind, right?

Hi Beth–
Thank you so much for including a link to our blog! So glad that gave me a chance to discover yours. I’d definitely consider myself a mainstream mom who’d like to be a little more crunchy.
Hi Rita, thanks for commenting – I stumbled on your blog recently, and am so compelled by your design stuff. We are moving into a new place March 15 (renting) and I am excited to put some effort into decorating for the first time in our married lives (ten years this May!). Your “undesign” philosophy really resonates with me. Thanks for sharing!
Has the sap already started? I want to buy some maple syrup soon, but the Powassan Maple Syrup Festival isn’t until April.
I remember as a little girl going to my grandparents and Papa and “the boys” were collecting the sap and cooking it. I liked the taste of the sap even, it had a little bit of a woody taste.
Sadly, we didn’t get to go today after all, because it was forecasted to be about -20 with the windchill, and since we have 3 kids 4 and under, we figured – maybe next year.
I like the taste of the sap too! Subtly sweet
