Starting Seeds Indoors (Or, “The Black Thumb of Death”)

All ready for a special before-bed-project with mommy – planting our tomato and sweet pepper seeds!

fragile eggshells filled with dirt are altogether too tempting for a little boy to stay away from. so we just tried to keep the mess to a minimum.

Isaac carefully placed each tiny seed into its little eggshell – 3 seeds to a shell.

He did such a great job – very careful and gentle. I love it when he learns through natural life experiences. Education at its finest…

Just a little bit of mess… pretty good, all things considered!

He was so proud and happy to help… I love having such a good helper by my side.

Seeds planted… full of hope for a summer of yummy tomatoes and peppers.

It was a lovely evening with the sun shining in, spring in the air, and a hopeful newbie-gardener armed and ready. I had carefully saved and washed my eggshells from breakfasts the last few days. I had my dirt… my {organic heirloom, non-GMO) seeds, and my cute little helper. I even had a sunroom.

We planted.

Watered.

Carefully placed the tray in the sunroom, placed ‘just so’ in front of the window.

And waited.

More watering.

And again… and again.

Until one day…

SPROUTS! Six of them!

More watering.

Oops… forgot a day.

Watering and waiting with bated breath.

Three come ‘back to life’.

Days go by.

No more sprouts.

Just three survivors.

Days go by.

Baby sneaks into sunroom. Eats one sprout (including dirt).

Down to two, growing strong.

2-3 inches high.

No more sprouts.

Out of thirty eggshells… I have TWO plants.

Black thumb of death indeed…

To be continued…

I love the eggshell idea. I never would have thought of that. Thanks for sharing! BTW, also love your blog =} Former homeschooling mom.

You might not need a tractor for the harvest, but the junior gardener sure is cute. Grammie sure approves of this project as a fun and educational project and has fond memories when the Mommy of this project was a tiny little girl and “helped” plant our garden.

Sara and I tried some flowers recently…day 8 and no sprouts. I think I may have done something wrong… I wasn’t nearly as meticulous as you were, clearly. (:

The package should say how long the germination period is… you could check that to see. I’d say there’s probably still hope :)

LOL Well Beth, at least you are trying! I might next year…we will see. I would love to have a vegetable garden, but not sure I really have the patience for it!

I feel like if you can get past the sprout stage, it’s (hopefully??) not too hard :) but what do I know… clearly I’m not the one to ask about gardening :)

yeah, you really do have poor lucky with gardening.
but at least you didn’t light something in the kitchen on fire.

actually… there was that one time at 143 newton when I was a newlywed… (i think katrina was there) when I didn’t realize you couldn’t put the crockpot pot part on a stovetop, and I was trying to make gravy… the thing cracked in half, the grease went all over, and there may have been a “few” flames :) haha!

Oh man. I wouldn’t have made it past the saving the egg shell phase, let alone watering them. Seriously, I am the worst gardener in the world. I tried last year, but the weeds won. I hate weeding.
